WILDERNESS WASHINGTON TROUT

One of the prettiest rivers in the Pacific Northwest is seldom fished. The O'Keefe clan, including our 82 year old mother, hiked into North Cascades National Park, to a very remote area. After 22 miles in one day, we arrived at the Stehikin River. Most people take the Lady of the Lake passenger boat from the town of Chelan to Stehekin. We chose to hike/horsepack into the upper tribs and eventually to Stehekin Valley Ranch for cabins and chow. The scenery is spectacular and there are some small, medium, large and a few extra large rainbows and cutthroat trout. Big attractors got the action. We did a half day float with resident guide, John Wilsey, that was really fun. Check out these shots.

SALMONFLIES AND RAINBOWS

Like many fly anglers here in Central Oregon, we like to grab a raft or drift boat and head to the Deschutes River in June. This year, the cold and blustery weather made for an unpredictable salmonfly hatch. So, we went later than usual and hit some 80 degree weather, lots of bugs, lots of 'looking up' rainbows and very few people. These multi-day floats are a great combination of fly fishing (wade only, there is no fishing from the boat on the lower Deschutes), riverside camping and whitewater. Throw in the usually dry and warm weather in June and you have a very nice and exciting river trip. On this float, there were still some big salmonflies in the tall grass along the banks, but there were more golden stones and a lot of caddis. A golden stone with a dry caddis dropper was a good combo. The BLM camping spots had a couple parties in them, but there was room for everyone. I ran into Catch Magazine contributor Abe Blair at the Buskskin Mary Campground. I also had a nice chat with guide Chris O'Donnell, from Maupin. This year, I only had time for one multi-day float during the salmonfly hatch and it had to be in late June. Turns out, the post hatch period was very good and we had the best weather of the year. Jeff Adams sent in a nice article about striper fishing in Massachusetts for his 4 - Pack photo essay that is in the May 1 issue. We only needed a small amount of text in Catch Magazine, but the article is a nice read, so here it is:

The Elizabeth Islands are hewn by wind, time and tide out of glacial deposits left eons ago by a retreating ice age. Running southwest from Cape Cod, this island chain forms the natural barrier defining Buzzards Bay from Vineyard Sound. At seven miles long, Naushon is the largest of these islands .

Caught in a constant crossfire of multiple tidal influences, the shoreline is a jumble of massive boulders, deep pocket waters and shallow sand bars. Along the Vineyard Sound shoreline, there are few breaks in the rocky shore. This coast is frequently battered by heavy seas that sweep past Martha’s Vineyard. Naushon’s northern shore holds long stretches of beach, and a great number of shoals. Wind and current on the Buzzard’s bay side are infamous. Gusts pop up on summer afternoons and can reach 15-25 knots on a day that starts off as calm. A relatively shallow body of water, Buzzard’s Bay can become it’s own hazard to navigation in only an hour.

This is the land of striper fishermen’s dreams. Rocky shorelines, shoals and a confluence of tides mean there is always a good place for fish to hide and something for the bass to eat. Herring, squid, eels and numerous other baitfish make this area their home. In the springtime, herring, in the midst of their spawning run, gather in large schools awaiting tides to ride in. The bass are right behind them, gorging on the nutrient rich feed. This time of year also marks the arrival of massive schools of squid. These creatures seemingly from another world, too become fodder for the bass’ insatiable appetites. As the water warms, more feed arrives. Sand eels, menhaden, creek chubs, crabs and the offspring of the herring flood these waters. September and October offer great fishing as the stripers gorge themselves in preparation for their migration to southern waters.

From early May to November, anglers search out these pockets of bait by the tell tale sign, gulls and terns flocking over feeding hordes of commingled schools of stripers and bluefish. These predators strike at the surface, causing great thrashing eruptions of bait arcing to the sky in an attempt to avoid the crushing blow from tails and teeth. A well placed fly can be torn from the best leader under the sudden weight. Like trout anglers, saltwater fly fishermen must focus on the available baitfish and match their pattern selection to the size, color and action of whatever the school is feeding on.

JOULTER CAYS, BAHAMAS

My first trip to the Joulter Cays, just off the northern tip of Andros Islands, Bahamas, was in a float plane with Randall Kaufmann. We were dropped off and left for a week. If the weather stayed good, we would be picked up, just as the food ran out... We camped and got around in an inflatable Aire, two person kayak (great fishing tool) and we could wade for miles. Later, I met guide Philip Rolle (eating conch salad at the Sly Fox Conch Bar in Nicholls Town) and we have been fishing together for over 17 years. Philip is a wonderful person and fantastic guide. I recommend him to everyone and to people who want some Bonefish 101. He is very good at explaining the tides, bonefish habits, fishing techniques and casting. I am going to guess that the wade-able area in the Joulters is around 100 square miles. So, expect to get out and wade. In many cases the flats go to the horizon. In addition to bonefish, and some big bonefish, there are cuda, snapper, permit and tarpon. These are not an everyday experience, but when the stars line up, you can go after a grand slam. Besides really good fishing, I keep going back for the scenery. Deep water to the east brings the clearest water you can imagine into the channels and onto the flats. That, plus a lot of white sand make for absolutely perfect fishing and photo conditions. Enjoy a look at Philip's backyard.

THE BROWNS OF CHILE

Some of my best hopper days have come on the windiest days. If it is warm and windy, browns keep an eye out for hoppers that end up in the water. On a twisty, winding creek like Zorro Spring Creek, it takes a good caster to keep the fly 'in play'. Gusts can move your line and fly a good ten feet from the target. Snappy casts and tight loops will help. Here, angler/guide/fly tier/artist, Sebastian Letelier and a local gaucho's son and I fish into a gale, but big browns were all over our hoppers and beetles. Everyone else moved into the canyon or back to the lodge (for some tasty empanadas/snacks) and we had an entire afternoon on the spring creek to ourselves. Tip - If you are going to place that gets some wind (about everywhere) practice on windy days, not just calm, easy days.

Behind the Scenes - Float Tube Tarpon - 'Tapam'

Everyone is talking about 'Tapam', the float tube tarpon video in the current issue of Catch Magazine. No, we are not going to tell you where Daniel Goz and Jan Bach Kristensen filmed it, but we did ask them some questions on their unique experiences.

CM - What was your tackle of choice for this adventure?
We were super happy that Scott Fly Rods and Mako Reels supported the film project. No rod broke and the reels never failed to impress. We abused our tackle. The rods were Scott S4S, 12 weights and the reels were the 9550 SW.

CM - What lines and leader were you using?
We used the RIO Leviathon because of its strong core material. For leaders we used straight 130 pound fluorocarbon.

CM - I noticed that you were tagging fish. What was that all about?
The Bonefish and Tarpon Trust provided us with tags. The idea was to find out as much as possible about their migrations and growth rate. The small spaghetti tags hold all the necessary contact information.

CM - Your float tube stategy is entertaining and effective. How did that come about?
I (Daniel Goz) had the idea in 2007, when I fished a very remote part of Central America. The lack of guides and fuel led up to this. The idea was to be able to move around in rivers, creeks and bays. With some practice, you can hook, fight and land big tarpon in a tube. We did not put ourselves at risks. We talked to the locals about crocs and sharks. In ten years we have never seen a croc or shark.

CM - I am curious about the title 'Tapam'.
Tapam is a local word for tarpon, used on the entire Caribbean Central American coast, from Panama to Honduras.

THE BIG EASY - NEW ORLEANS

The fly fishing in and around New Orleans, Louisiana is really fun. Quality guides will show you a saltwater marsh environment teeming with big redfish, sea-trout (specs), sheepshead and really big black drum. Nonstop action is fairy common. 10 to 25 pound redfish are the primary target. Many of these fish are spotted less than 30 feet from the skiff and often they are seen feeding from 100 yards. My trip was made possible by Uptown Angler in downtown New Orleans. All tackle, clothing and flies are available there. Guides can meet you at the store to get everything organized.

But wait, that's not all. New Orleans is a very interesting city, possibly the most interesting in the entire US. Why? Because of a rich history, amazing architecture, by US standards, a tradition of great, local food, museums, characters and an infectious spirit. I'm not an expert on the city, in fact I am far from even 'quite knowledgeable', so with that being said, here is my New Orleans 'Things To Do List'.

1. Right off the bat, the French Quarter is a great place to get into the swing of things. It is world famous for huge parties, "show me your___" and more partying. If that is all the French Quarter means to you, sadly you will miss so many other incredible, uniquely New Orleans attractions. The small things like the wrought-iron balconies, the tall shutters, the smell of spicy food as it wafts out onto the street blending with the sound of jazz, blues and zydeco music make strolling aimlessly a huge tourist attraction. There are restaurants, famous chefs and menus that keep Creole traditions alive and well. Just to wet your appetite - there are over 300 restaurants in the French Quarter.

2. The World War II Museum. From canteens to tanks, this is a great place to connect with 'The Big One'. Plan on two hours and then some. The WW II Museum will affect you. The collection of battlefield equipment, films, newspaper headlines, statistics will stir emotions from with-in you, as it should.

3. The Civil War Museum is a block from the WW II Museum. Another great place to see artifacts and to learn about early US history.

4. Neighborhoods. Near the French Quarter, but pleasingly different, are streets and districts that show the rich history and early American-French differences. Julia Street is a collection of thirteen, mid-19th century townhouses. It is also a collection of fantastic art galleries. The architecture is very interesting, also. Just south of Julia Street is the Contemporary Arts Center, the latest and greatest and the soul of the New Orleans arts renaissance. Admission is only $5 and it is free on Thursday. Then, there is the Garden District, where early Americans settled after the Louisiana Purchase (good job Thomas Jefferson!!). The National Park Service offers free tours. Mansions, incredible landscaping, gardens, food, lodging and shopping. The Garden District is a like anti-venom after a late night on Bourbon Street. Classy, dignified, elegant, proper, respectful and charming.

5. The Uptown Angler. You have to drop in on the good people at the Uptown Angler. They have it all. Besides all the guides, tackle and flies, they will help you find a good place for lunch, a museum and other attractions, day or night.

6. Saints Football. A Sunday must. Saints football is crazy. The whole city goes nuts. Everyone seems to know Drew Brees. "I had lunch with Drew..." (that means he was 6 tables away), "I had drinks with Drew..." (that means he was walking down the street and you were gulping too many Hurricanes, "My cousin...", okay, okay you get the point. No matter who 'your team' is, be a Saints fan for a day, it's OK.

7. In between everything EAT!! Crabs and Creole specialties, like etouffee, jambalaya, gumbo and oysters. Oysters, I eat oysters from the Gulf in the cool or winter months and I eat a lot of them.

8. If you find yourself in some serious summer heat or an afternoon rain and need some indoor entertainment try the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas, the Entergy IMAX Theater, the Gordon Biersch Brewery, the Old New Orleans Rum Distillery and there are many more activities for the wild and crazy to families - just do a Google search. Don't forget to check out the zoos, nature centers and zoological gardens. Oh, did I mention Mardi Gras!!! CUBA TARPON TIPS

The guides in Cuba, that I have fished with, have several simple, helpful hints for their anglers and tarpon fishermen anywhere in the world. They have the benefit of having a lot of fish to cast at and a lot of unpressured fish that eat flies with mucho enthusiasm. Here is a list of tips from a couple great Avalon guides.

1. Casting. Yes, that common suggestion from all guides, trout/steelhead/flats, everywhere. In the case of a tarpon guide, he would like to have anglers with moderate casting skills to practice, and to practice with a 12 weight. You might be using a 10 weight in Cuba, but after some practice with a heavier rod, the 10 feels light and easy to cast. The double haul is a must. Learn to shoot line on your back cast. That can really help deliver the fly with some distance in only a couple false casts. Practicing on windy days might be a trip saver, also.

Posture. Cuba guides like anglers to finish their cast and take an athletic stance as they start the strip. Right handed anglers would cast in a throwing stance, with the left foot forward and the right foot at least two feet behind the left foot. This body position allows the angler to lean forward during the strip and after the strike, they can stand up and lean back tightening the line while initiating the strip strike. It is a very powerful combination. Buy leaning forward, with the rod slightly extended, it makes doing a 'trout' strike harder to do, also.

Strip Strike. You have it, or you don't. A coordinated strip strike comes with experience. A good way to get a strip strike that the guide will not critique is easy. Go out on your lawn with another person and cast a line out 60 feet. Have the helper stand at 40 feet with his or her foot on the fly line. The caster gets into the 'athletic stance', leans forward and starts to strip the line in. The helper then steps down on the line and the caster straightens up and with the rod pointing straight at the the helpers foot, uses the line hand to grab the lane hard and pull back. I like to think that the strip strike is like having a hand line, the rod does very little but stay straight, pointing at the tarpons mouth. Let the fish turn, keep the line tight, breath, stay loose, then get ready to clear line. In the skiff, the other angler should not be taking photos and talking until he assists the angler with loose line. When the fish is on the reel, whoop it up.

Fighting. Try to fight a tarpon with the lower three feet of your rod. The mid section and tip are for casting, the butt is for fighting. You should even be able to feel the rod bend in the cork. Keep as much pressure on the fish and listen to the guide. When it is time to land the fish, get some distance between you and the guide. If you are too close the rod will be very stressed and will often break at the last second. Don't rush the fish, even though you are tired, get the leader in the guides hand and as soon as he grabs it get slack in your line so if the fly pops out it won't hook the guide. I like to unhook, revive and release tarpon outside the boat in shallow water, if possible. Tarpon inside the boat can be hard on the fish.

Small Tarpon. Baby tarpon are a blast and are a good fish to get these skills honed before big or giant tarpon are sought. Ask your guide about small tarpon if you want to have him help you with casting, strip striking, etc. It is all good.

Central Oregonians are growing the popular website Catch Magazine

The plane lost its brakes on the small dirt runway in the Bahamas, swerved to the left and crashed into a cluster of mangrove bushes.

Nobody was killed or even seriously injured. But Todd Moen was done with traveling to remote locales as a videographer for a company that produces fishing and outdoors television shows.

“Twenty minutes later, a guy on a mo-ped shows up to help,” Moen recalls, laughing. “I'm so lucky I lived, and nobody got hurt. ... It was unbelievable. After that, I was over traveling, because I was on the road all the time for two years.”

Since then they’ve made some big improvements to Catch and had some more great adventures, so we’ll find out what they’ve been up to on today’s Fish Schtick.

PERMIT THEORIES

The Cuba Grand Slam Series started in Issue #13 and featured bonefish. In Issue #14 we continued the series with permit. The guides who work for Avalon at Tortuga, Cayo Largo and on the motherships see permit everyday. I had the great fortune to be on the water 20 days, in the making of the Grand Slam Series. Bonefishing was great, as was the tarpon fishing, but it was permit that really gave the guides a chance to show their stuff.

I made mental notes while fishing with these great guides. Here are a couple that everyone should remember -

1. On clean, sand flats, which are usually fairly deep, around 5 to 6 feet deep, your fly needs to sink to the fishes level. So, there are two ways to get it there. One, is to use a very long tippet so that the fly has less resistance while sinking. A tapered leader gets fatter and the added diameter slows the sink rate down. I know trout anglers who do the same thing with nymphs. The second way, is to lead the fish by 15 feet and give your fly some time to sink. I have always liked a fly coming off the bottom for permit. It pulls a little sand or marl with it and looks even more realistic.

2. On flats with a lot of coral, sea fans and other potential hazards, a knot-less leader can save the day. Many times a hooked permit will be lost in the coral, but it is not always from being cut on the obstructions. Many times permit run through coral, just like a bonefish through the mangrove. The leader and line follow the fish on this nerve-wracking journey. Often the tippet knot or butt section knot hangs up on something and the fish breaks off. The line was not cut, it snapped because of knots in the leader. Try long knot-less leaders and make a smooth connection at your nail knot by covering the knot with a soft epoxy.

3. Permit seem to bite better when the angler is farther away from the fish. I have seen many fish, in schools tailing, feeding and acting what guides call 'happy'. As the boat gets closer than 75 feet, they become slightly less happy and when the boat gets closer than 50 feet, your odds of a hook up are greatly affected. When permit are cruising toward the boat, they can be had at close range, but tailers in calm water do not like hearing boat slap, noises in the boat, etc. Here the cast is king. A solid double haul, smooth and calculated at a distance of 80 feet will get many more fish to eat and that really makes the guides day easier.

4. When fishing in foreign countries where language is an issue, try a couple drills to get everyone on the same wavelength. I like to spot a dark spot on the bottom, or a mangrove shoot, or a sting ray and ask the guide how far he thinks it is. If he is just OK with my language, I know he knows some words better than others and he might say 40 feet because it is easier than saying 65. After a couple trial and error distance sessions, I have a good idea what his distance communication habits are. When distance and 'the clock' are vital in making a good first cast, knowing his habits are useful. Also, throw some line and say to your guide, "OK, this is my best cast." He will then know what your distance limitations are and use that information to position you accordingly. If he knows you max out at 55 feet, he will use that in his strategy. If you rock a cast of 85 feet, as a demo, he will smile and say something nice!!

5. Last but not least is to stay calm. I have seen many anglers cast a sweet loop, smooth and with some nice distance, only to freak out when they see a nice permit and their casting goes crazy. Instead of that smooth loop, they rush and get jerky and the line and fly fall short, again and again. Just breath, think and stay calm. Sometimes the guides put too much pressure on the angler and when you tense up, the fly will wrap around the poling pole, or hit the motor, or dump in a pile. Stay loose, stay in YOUR zone, fish with your instincts. Brian O.

I have received quite a few comments about the "perfect day" where there is great weather, scenery, rising fish and no people. Finding that scenario takes a little luck and usually going to places a bit farther off the road and mid-week. It made me think of my favorite places where these factors come together, so I dug up a few more photos to continue this theme. Brian O.

And over in Chile, there are many rivers and under fished lakes where it all comes together.

Summer hopper fishing on lesser known streams in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming have great potential. If you fish with a guide in these states, ask him or her about a sneaky little secret spot and see what happens.

Places like the Middle Fork of the Salmon, in the Idaho wilderness, have limited access which makes for open waters and happy trout.

My brother John casts on a river in NE Oregon where we used horses to pack into this area. No anglers, great weather equals a fun family reunion.

If you have it, money can get you into remote areas! Helicopters are an amazing fishing tool. They are used here in British Columbia, Canada, in NZ, Spain, Chile, Russia and other places. Watch your rod tip!

Those perfect days make up for these. It's nice to know that with a little extra effort, be it with a mountain bike, raft, backpack, etc, you can find water that is uncrowded, scenic and with healthy fish and hatches.

Todd spent the first week and half of September chasing steelhead in Northern British Columbia with Canadian, Hannah Belford.

For Todd, it was a glimpse into a life most people dream of;

living within a short walk to stellar waters, seeing mountains in every direction , and sharing habitat with North America's kings of the food chain- the grizzly bears and wolves who frequently visit camp.

The simplicity of living in the backcountry among all these things, away from the rat race AND the Catch Magazine office - not to mention chasing FATTY CANADIAN STEELHEAD made him wanna live there! But it wouldn't be all playtime, cause it's a daunting reality of daily tasks required to survive there: milling trees, building everything from scratch, solar power, gardening and the weekly planeload of supplies.

Todd caught up on the good old tunes of Canadian folk legend Gordon Lightfoot, made great lifetime friends, and came home with a new outlook on life. Simplify, simplify, simplify!

Do that and catch fish, too..... gotta love it.

Thanks to fantastic cover photo and photo essay by Ken Tsurusaki we have seen a real spike in new readers of Catch Magazine in Japan. The language issue doesn't seem to be slowing down the popularity of Catch Magazine. Japan has always had many very good fly fishing photographers and an appreciation of fly fishing art. We now have readers in over 200 cities with hundreds in the larger cities. That lone dot to the south is the city of Naha, population 300,000. Here is a photo from Naha.

MONTANA ROAD-TRIP

Brian wandered around Montana recently and besides finding excellent fishing he dropped in on the nice people at the Winston Rod Company. Holding the Catch Magazine banner is Leslie Clark (left) and Annette McLean. The in-house museum and a factory tour are very interesting. The fishing on the nearby Ruby River was fantastic, as was the Beaverhead.

The hoppers were just getting going, but the Yellow Sally's and PMD's were everywhere and the trout were on them. In the thick willows along the Beaverhead, some big streamers were the happening item, also. No trip to Montana would be complete without dropping in on our buddy Jay Burgin at 5 Rivers Lodge. The food was as good as the view. Of course a couple thunderstorms had to get in on the act and the rainbows were a nice touch after a good rain.

The water levels in Montana streams are ideal and should stay good all season. Hatches are strong and the hoppers should be awesome for the next two months. On lower elevation rivers in Idaho and Oregon the hoppers were so thick that as you walked along a grassy river bank, hundreds of grasshoppers would fly ahead and many would land in the river. Is this chumming??!!

Another fun thing about fishing in Montana and the trout rivers of Idaho, Wyoming and Oregon is bumping into old friends along the way. Catch Magazine contributor (Issue #11 cover) Bryan Huskey was fishing with and helping celebrate the 30th birthday of Troy Garcia (photo below), who works at Fly & Field Outfitters in Bend, Oregon. Then at 5 Rivers Lodge, Don and Joy Knickrehn of the Idaho Angler Fly Shop were hanging out. Good fun, good people, good fishing.

Photojournalism - Cuban Wilderness

With an invite from Avalon - Cuban Fishing Centers, Brian spent a good chunk of late May and early June taking photos, notes and doing interviews at three fly fishing destinations. Two were on the water, the Tortuga, a floating lodge and the live aboard boat, Fleet One. The third was on the resort island of Cayo Largo. All the fishing is remote to practically inaccessible without the guidance from Avalon. The trip will be broke down into three photo essays called the Grand Slam Series - Permit, Tarpon and Bonefish, with the first starting in the September issue. Very good fishing and the wilderness experience combined for a fantastic "work trip".

Featured in Brian's Slide Show May 1. Where in the heck is Guadeloupe? Many maps don't even go to the trouble to put another dot in the Caribbean, but soon fly anglers will be buzzing about this great shallow water destination. With sensational guide Alexis Ducros (and the only fly guide in Guadeloupe) and long bomb caster Rick Hartman, we hooked all the Super Slam species. Tarpon a plenty and a couple over 100 pounds, a permit estimated to be 20 pounds and shots to two dozen, snook around 10 pounds and bonefish landed to 7 pounds but 10 pounders were spotted. Add extra scrumptious French food to pretty beaches and you are close to understanding the attraction of Guadeloupe. On the way, Brian went to Haiti and walked around a little and his luggage stayed there for 5 days!! Good thing Rick is a mobile tackle shop.

CANOE SNOOK

Todd Moen snapped a quick photo of Brian O'Keefe with a pretty nice snook while doing some video for the May 1 issue of Catch Magazine. This lagoon is way back in the boonies, south of Playa Blanca Lodge near Espiritu de Santos Lagoon, the big bay south of Ascension Bay. Several of these hog snook took the fly while navigating in a Coleman canoe. Add another ten pounds to this snook and that is how big two snook were that got away. True monsters. This action and a lot of tailing bones on the oceanside flats and some wade tarpon fishing made for a great trip.

While shooting photos for the March 1, 2010 - Issue #10 Catch Magazine slide show in Chile, I had a wonderful surprise. My guide turned out to be Sebastian Letelier of fly tying fame. Sebastian has won world championship Atlantic salmon fly tying competitions. He ties hand help, no vice. His flies are amazing. Then, we checked out some of his artwork. Just as beautiful. When you meet Sebastian for the first time, there is a lot going on. His hair and beard are blowing in the wind, an old Filson vest and Barbour jacket tells the tale of a man outside. A Hardy reel balances a Winston fly rod.

CHILE TRIP WINNER

In Issue #3 we offered a free trip to Estancia del Zorro in Coyhaique Alto, Chile. The winner was Kevin Singh Dhillon from New Zealand. Quite some time passed and several e-mails were exchanged. Then last week, while I was fishing Zorro Spring Creek, I actually had the pleasure to meet our winner face to face. Well, not exactly face to face, because Kevin in 6 foot 6!! Kevin took to the fishing in Chile with wild enthusiasm. He fished a lake with selective 15 pound rainbows, snuck up on risers in the spring creek, waded the freestone rivers and entertained all the guests with his daily adventures. He and his angling companion, Samantha, were going from Zorro to the Amazon in Brazil for peacock bass, then to Argentina for golden dorado. We will get a report soon. The funny thing is, Kevin actually e-mailed many websites and blogs to ask if the prize was for real or if it was a scam!!!

Brian O'Keefe left Catch Magazine partner Todd Moen to answer phones while he pursued brown trout in Chile last week. The March 1, 2010/Issue 10 Slide Show will feature the trip to Estancia del Zorro in Coyhaique Alto, in the true Patagonia Region of Chile. Brian reports that several days on the Zorro Spring Creek included browns over 25 inches on terrestrials and several remote mountain rivers with scenery that was awe inspiring. Stay tuned for more reports about trout fishing in Chile.

The crew from Chime Lodge, some guests and local fly anglers came together at the famous Ruca Hueney restaurant in Junin, Argentina in the state of Neuquen. Known for decades to local, national and international fly fishers as the best place to eat and drink fine wines after a day on the Chimehuen River. We had an entire lamb - carna asado style - and other delectable treats from the 12 foot wood fired grill. Junin is well known for other things, like supermodel Yesica Toscanini , wooly mammoth fossils, heavyweight contender Luis Angel Firpo - the Wild Bull of the Pampas - who sent Jack Dempsey through the ropes in 1923, Tour de France rider Juan Antonio Flecha, Maria Eva Duarte who is better known as Evita Peron, a former first lady of Argentina and Junin was the site of a world championship gliding competition. And, some world class fly fishing.

All weather conditions were encountered and some will make for entertaining video. The guides at Chime Lodge kept us moving around so we could fish clear water and at times "never been fished before" water. Argentina is a beautiful place with fantastic scenery, cities, food, wine and of course, fly fishing.

The above photo is from Salta, Argentina. A beautiful city, especially at night. Salta is close to several rivers with golden dorado to 40 pounds. Brian hooked one monster while Todd filmed the long distance release!! As payback, Todd grabbed a rod and landed a few nice fish himself.

Todd and Brian traveled 40 hours from Orgeon (cold, windy and blowing snow) to LA, then Dallas, then Buenos Aries, then Bariloche and then a 2 hour drive to the banks of the Chimehuim River (cold, windy and blowing snow). Todd is shooting some great extreme weather fly fishing video. I have the cold hands to prove it. We have found several nice browns that have hit streamers in the fast, cold but clear water. Stay tuned.

GOOD TIMES IN DENVER

Todd and Brian attended the International Fly Tackle Retailer Show in Denver, Colorado, September 10, 11 and 12. This three day event is where all the fly fishing manufacturers, fly shops, international distributors, fly fishing media and fly fishing travel specialists meet and do business. The support we received was overwhelming.

We started the FFR Show off the night before at a fun event with our friends at Trout's Fly Shop in Denver. New Belgium Brewing provided the tasty beer and we socialized with friends of Catch Magazine.

The FTR Show gave Catch Magazine an opportunity to see and thanks our advertisers. Everyone is there - Winston, Scientific Anglers, Simms, Patagonia, William and Joseph, Avalon, Nautilus and more. 40% of the people who stopped by the Catch Magazine booth really liked Catch Magazine, the other 60% loved Catch Magazine!!

The highlight of the FTR Show was Todd winning the award for BEST CINEMATOGRAPHER at the Drake Film Festival. This annual event follows the Scientific Angler Party (more New Belgium beer!!) in a large room where hundreds of fly fishing industry folk view the latest in fly fishing videos. Todd entered ALPINE BASS from Issue 6 and the crowd went wild.

We would like to congratulate Curtis Stowe (that guy in the river) for winning our July/August Subscription Contest. He wins the coveted Vaughn Cochran tarpon print. Curtis told us the following about himself - "I grew up fishing in in upstate South Carolina and developed a love for fishing at a early age. My earliest memories of fishing are with my dad for bluegills on the lake near our house. Growing up I fished for bass, catfish, and perch with my dad, granddad and good friends in our local lakes and rivers and gradually progressed to trout fishing. Then I started to get interested in fly fishing and began picking it up. After college I moved to California and began to explore the Sierras and all the trout fishing opportunities there. Most recently, I've moved to Nebraska and am now exploring Colorado and the Midwest for fishing opportunities. I'm also scheduled to go fishing in Slovenia in a month or so...." I (Brian) an heading north on August 6th to fish a very special river - The Aniak. I'll be staying with Aniak River Lodge. Years ago I did the long float and found the rainbows, char, grayling and several salmon species to be big and plentiful. The Aniak is the northernmost rainbow trout river in North America and the southernmost sheefish (see below photo) river in North America.

In addition to these fish, the silvers will be thick. My images will be the September 1 issue Slide Show.

In the September 1 issue, we will be sharing some absolutely amazing photos from Daniel Goez of Germany. Somewhere, he and a friend, have found a big tarpon "secret spot". They fish, fight and release monster tarpon from Outcast Fat Cat float tubes. Daniel is, in my opinion, one of the most interesting people in the fly fishing photography community. He is an open ocean free diver, also. His tarpon essay will blow your mind.

GINGER OR MARY ANN ???~!!!

OK, for those of you over 45 years old, how would you answer? Well, I (Brian) have never met Ginger, but I did just fish the Big Hole and Beaverhead, in SW Montana with Mary Ann. No kidding, Dawn Wells is a fly fisher and we caught some nice browns and a 12 inch Big Hole grayling (close to the Maiden Rock Bridge). Dawn was a guest at 5 Rivers Lodge in Dillon, and we managed to get in some fly fishing and do a little video. Dawn is very nice, talented and knows a good dry fly when she sees one.

Catch Magazine (Todd and Brian) just returned from an action packed week on the Middle Fork of the Salmon River in Idaho. We went with Jeff Helfrich - Tight Lines Fishing and they showed us an incredible experience. Look for Todd's T-Motion video in the September 1, 2009 issue. All day dry fly fishing and mountainous whitewater was great. The camps, food and skillful guides were world-class.
